Walking in a Snowstorm, Wondering if it’s Worth it
Glenn Wallis
You face it as it falls.
And looking up—
Snow floating like flour sifted
Far beyond the sky.
Flake by pasty flake swirling
Now as for hours
Through the icy air.
Nearer to my eyes now
I focus on a single fleck.
Don’t flinch! I tell myself,
As hordes of storming White
Cossacks swarm in a gust.
Just one flake now;
I follow it down, and watch
As it settles on the ground,
And lies for a moment
Like a child.
Like a child
Looking up from her bed
Into the darkening room
Before she shuts her eyes and
Drifts into sleep, submerged,
Dissolving, disappearing,
Falling with each fading moment
Deeper into the feather down blanket
Lain by the ancestors.
